Hoars Frost

Oconto County, Wisconsin

Hoars Frost happens when fog forms and then temperatures drop below freezing. The water-saturated air cools as it touches solid objects resulting in delicate white ice crystals. However, it is not necessary to know what causes the frost to appreciate its beauty.

When the sun breaks through the fog, temperatures usually rise and the fragile crystals start dropping away. If you want to photograph this beautiful phenomenon you have to move quickly. On this January day it stayed overcast which made the frost last longer but because it was a low contrast, gray day it was challenging to photogragh.
