High Water

Covered Bridge Park, Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Dad capturing a photo of Cedar Creek over its banks.

We have had a lot of rain in the past few days ~ including 2 inches on Saturday night. Along with the ice and snow melt it has caused the rivers and creeks to approach flood stage. I had been to the park Tuesday afternoon to photograph when the water was very still and there were interesting reflections. I saw fish swimming in the shallow areas on the lawn and hoped they didn't get stuck there when the waters receded.

When I returned on Wednesday with my parents it was obvious that the creek had risen even further. Thankfully it was not close to the flood of a few years ago when this entire park turned into a small lake. A new weather system arrived Tuesday evening bringing high winds and snow flurries. It was actually spitting snow when we were here at the park although you cannot see it in the photographs. The cold temperatures (20's and 30's) continue. It is as if Mother Nature is playing a very prolonged April Fools joke on us. We are ready to move on to actual spring, now! Can you hear us, Mother Nature?

Mom mesmerized by the rushing water.

This is usually the grassy picnic area.

Although floods can cause obvious problems for homeowners and communities they provide interesting opportunites for photographers. The reflections that occur in puddles and temporary ponds offer a study in symmetry.
